The lovers is a card about love, relationships, and choices. When it appears in a reading, it can be harbinger of good things: a decision, a close partnership, a true love match. The reversed is auspicious in a different way.
The Reading
The lovers, reversed, is still about love, relationships, and choices but—get ready—it shines a light on the difficult aspects of these things. This week, with this card, I feel especially tuned into the idea of unhealthy attachments.
Most probably this unhealthy attachment involves a person (but there are other ways this attachment could appear)—a person who means a lot to you but is not so good for you right now. Are they oblivious to your needs? Or do they keep you mired in your less-than-optimal self? Are you waiting for them to be something other than the person they are? (Is that a fair thing to do?) Are you using them as an excuse for your own stuckness? (ouch!)
Unhealthy attachments can also take the form of a place—where you live, where you work—or a defining habit or practice. It’s worth considering whether where you are and what you do serve you.
A tip: If you find yourself using these things as an excuse for why you can’t do what you really want to do, it’s a sign—either that you have an unhealthy attachment or that you don’t really want to do the thing you say you want to do. (How’s that for a brain twister?)
Again: Ouch!
I wanted to mark the passing of the great Rachel Pollack, whose work on tarot has been an inspiration to me and countless others. I hope you’ll read her short essay on story.
He's 18 already but I'm counting the days until detachment!
Ugh totally going through some attachment issues having to live with a teenage step son. Help!
