The Reading
Drama is afoot. Though this card has several aspects to it—all tarot cards do—the idea of challenge is what stands out for me tonight. Think back to the last time someone really pushed your buttons. Were you angry or frustrated? How did the situation resolve?
Consider that the drama you’re experiencing now may be internal. The perceived threat and your defensive response may be triggered by your own insecurity. You are, after all, in a position of strength. It’s time to accept your position and expertise and not allow imposter syndrome to make false enemies of others. Who exactly is coming after you here anyway? What could possibly be their motive?
This card reminds us that sometimes it’s too easy to make something out of nothing. If we can rise above our own fears and narrow views, we will prevail.
Symbolism
The suit of wands is thought to indicate forcefulness, competition, action, and an overall masculine energy. Here, the sky is clear blue and the young man is clearly positioned above his attackers (but are they attackers?), which is to his certain advantage. He has a look of determination on his face.
But, most intriguingly, look at the man’s footwear: one is an unlaced shoe and the other is a boot.
There are a lot of varying opinions about what this could mean, and indeed the interpretation of the shoes depends on the overall interpretation of the card. What do you think the mismatched shoes mean?
